ItisclearthatthepopulationofIndiawasyoungerthanthatofFrancein1984,withanoticeablylargerproportionofpeopleagedunder20.France,ontheotherhand,hadasignificantlylargerpercentageofelderlyinhabitants.

InIndia,closeto14%ofpeoplewereaged5orunder,andeachfive-yearagebracketabovethiscontainedanincreasinglysmallerproportionofthepopulation.France’spopulation,bycontrast,wasmoreevenlydistributedacrosstheageranges,withsimilarfigures(around7%to8%ofallpeople)foreachfive-yearcohortbetweentheagesof0and40.Somewherebetween10%and15%ofallFrenchpeoplewereaged70orolder,buttheequivalentfigureforIndiawasonly2%.

Lookingmorecloselyatgender,therewasanoticeablyhigherproportionofFrenchwomenthanmenineverycohortfromage50upwards.Forexample,almost3%ofFrench70-to75-year-oldswerewomen,whilejustunder2%weremen.NosignificantgenderdifferencescanbeseenontheIndianpopulationchart.
