Itissometimesarguedthattouristsfromoverseasshouldbechargedmorethanlocalresidentstovisitimportantsitesandmonuments.Ipletelydisagreewiththisidea.

Theargumentinfavourofhigherpricesforforeigntouristswouldbethatculturalorhistoricalattractionsoftendependonstatesubsidiestokeepthemgoing,whichmeansthattheresidentpopulationalreadypaysmoneytothesesitesthroughthetaxsystem.However,Ibelievethistobeaveryshortsightedview.Foreigntouristscontributetotheeconomyofthehostcountrywiththemoneytheyspendonawiderangeofgoodsandservices,includingfood,souvenirs,amodationandtravel.Thegovernmentsandinhabitantsofeverycountryshouldbehappytosubsidiseimportanttouristsitesandencouragepeoplefromtherestoftheworldtovisitthem.

Iftravellersrealisedthattheywouldhavetopaymoretovisithistoricalandculturalattractionsinaparticularnation,theywouldperhapsdecidenottogotothatcountryonholiday.TotaketheUKasanexample,thetourismindustryandmanyrelatedjobsrelyonvisitorsingtothecountrytoseeplaceslikeWindsorCastleorSaintPaul’sCathedral.Thesetwositeschargethesamepriceregardlessofnationality,andthishelpstopromotethenation’sculturalheritage.Ifoverseastouristsstoppedingduetohigherprices,therewouldbeariskofinsufficientfundingforthemaintenanceoftheseimportantbuildings.

Inconclusion,Ibelievethateveryeffortshouldbemadetoattracttouristsfromoverseas,anditwouldbecounterproductivetomakethempaymorethanlocalresidents.
